Clearing out the Closets
Closets are vital to any house. They are your main storage area. But, how many times have you been in a hose
that has a closet you are not allowed to open because doing so will cause an avalanche? Do you have a closet like
that?
It’s time to get the shovels and start excavating. It’s almost spring now and that means that spring cleaning is
coming up. I like to get a head start when I can. Empty the closet entirely. This way you can clean every nook and
cranny and really see what you have. Sometimes we will only clean the clutter but not dig too deeply.
This is counterproductive. You need to really air it out and get some light in there. Once
it’s all layed out you may find something you have been looking for or you may take a look at all of it and have no
idea why you own any of it.
Here’s a good rule of thumb. If you can’t remember the last time you used something you found in the closet then
get rid of it. A closet is like the space below a set
of twin over twin bunk beds. If something gets pushed to the back then it may as well be buried in the dessert.
It’s time to get rid of it. If it’s not sentimental then put it on a table outside and have a yard sale.
Use shelving in your closets and throughout your home. Like a set of full over full bunk beds, having tall shelving to
the ceiling saves on floor space and offers a lot more value per square foot. You should also get thin, stacking
plastic storage bins. They are durable and great organizers. I suggest thin bins so they can be slipped under those
bunkbeds and they don’t just become a pile of junk you don’t want to
dig through.
Ditch your old clothes you never wear. If you have something worth saving, say a wedding dress then you should
get a proper storage bag and keep it. But other than that, if you can’t see yourself wearing it any time soon it
should go in the donation bag and go to someone who will really appreciate it. For your off season clothes that you
will still wear, I suggest vacuum garment bags. These are great for extra bedding and pillows too, which take up a
huge amount of space in a closet on their own.
